Definition  

The phrase ‘equality before law’ can be found in Article 14 of the Indian Constitution which ensures that every citizen shall be likewise protected by the laws of the country. It means that every person is entitled to the same treatment under the law and no person can claim any special privilege or immunity. It also means that the State cannot discriminate against any citizen on any grounds, except for reasonable classification based on intelligible differentia and rational nexus. 

Please note that Equality Before law is applicable on citizens and foreigners equally and everyone is below the law.

Why is Equality Before Law important in nation like ours?

For a country like India, which has a vast diversity of cultures, languages, religions and regions, equality before law is essential to maintain unity and harmony among the people. It also helps to respect and celebrate the diversity and richness of the Indian heritage and culture. It fosters a sense of belonging and identity among the citizens and strengthens the national integration. Equality before law also ensures that everyone is treated fairly and justly by the law, regardless of their social, economic, religious or political status.
