Introduction

In a bid to validate operational plans and enhance preparedness along the Western borders, the Sapta Shakti Command of the Indian Army recently conducted the 'Sudarshan Shakti 2023' exercise. Spanning from May 22 to 25, this exercise took place in the states of Rajasthan and Punjab, demonstrating the commitment of the South-western Command and its associated units to maintaining a high level of operational readiness.

The primary objective of 'Sudarshan Shakti 2023' was to test and validate operational plans in a network-centric environment.

The exercise focused on the application of combat power, combat support, and logistic support, while encompassing all domains of enemy threat, including Grey Zone Warfare. The integration of force multipliers such as special forces and the deployment of niche technologies like drones, tethered drones, loiter ammunition, and electronic warfare played a crucial role in the exercise.

One notable aspect of 'Sudarshan Shakti 2023' was the validation of the movement and application of large forces from outside the theatre, further enhancing the army's operational capabilities. The exercise also aligned with the objectives outlined by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Manoj Pande's five pillars of transformation, set forth in January 2023. These pillars aim to modernize and enhance the Indian Army's capabilities to effectively counter future conflicts.

Despite soaring temperatures, the participating troops displayed exemplary training standards and high morale throughout the exercise. This successful execution of 'Sudarshan Shakti 2023' attests to the commitment of the South Western Command and its associated units in maintaining operational preparedness and adapting to the requirements of technology-intensive conflicts.

The exercise was witnessed by Lt Gen BS Raju, General Officer Commanding-In-Chief of the Southwestern Command, and Air Marshal PM Sinha, Air Officer Commanding-In-Chief of the Western Air Command. Their presence signifies the strong interoperability between the army and air force in various operational scenarios, emphasizing the importance of joint operations and coordination among different branches of the armed forces.

The conclusion of 'Sudarshan Shakti 2023' not only highlights the success of the exercise but also underscores the commitment of the Indian Army towards maintaining a high level of operational preparedness. As geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve, exercises like these play a pivotal role in enhancing the capabilities of the armed forces, ensuring they are well-equipped to protect the nation's interests and respond effectively to future challenges.
